Seasons of the Swamp

PEACE PARK
alias " the swamp "

The land along the river between Burcham Park and Constant Park was donated to the city of Lawrence in the mid 1990s by Park Hetzel. Two major channels cut their way to the river across this property: the Water Plant discharge at approximately 3rd and Indiana Street, and the Pinckney Ditch 300 yards to the south. A major spring (or springs) exits the Pinckney highlands in at least seven spots below the railroad tracks, east of and roughly even with the 300 block of Indiana. Over the years the forces of man and nature have nearly landlocked these springs on their way to the river, creating a swampy wetlands area.

This fertile and lush wetlands environment, already a part of Lawrence's park system and just a few blocks from the heart of downtown, presents the city with a wonderful chance to develop a new and unique resource in an already long list of great parks.

Another consideration, perhaps of even greater concern, is the health issue -- mosquitoes are a health hazard (Douglas County Health Department) and they're a nuisance. It is in the best interests of all to control the situation -- controlling the mosquito population and reducing risk while maintaining as many species and aspects of the wetlands environment as possible.

Please add the Pinckney Wetlands Project to your list of issues.
Help make Lawrence a better and safer place to live.
