 U.S. Congress

Congressman Dennis Moore - Kansas Third District

Dennis Moore, a lifelong Kansan, became the first Democrat to win back to back terms in the Third Congressional District since the Great Depression. He represents Kansas' Third District, which is made up of Johnson, Wyandotte, Douglas and Miami Counties in Northeastern Kansas. His commitment to independent representation and extraordinary service to the citizens of the Third District have made him clearly the people's choice.

Dennis was born in Anthony, Kansas in 1945. He was educated in Wichita public schools. In 1967, he graduated from the University of Kansas, and received his law degree from Washburn University School of Law in 1970.

After service in the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Reserve, Dennis started his legal career as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Kansas. He entered private legal practice in Johnson County in 1973.

In 1976, Dennis was elected Johnson County District Attorney. He was reelected in 1980 and 1984. During his tenure as District Attorney, he earned the reputation as a tough but fair prosecutor. As District Attorney, Dennis:
  • personally prosecuted more than 25 felony jury trials
  • led the Consumer Protection Division in the investigation and  successful prosecution of a national oil company charged with rigging gas pumps to cheat consumers
  • established the Victim Assistance Unit
  • was cited by an independent consultant hired by the Johnson County Board of Commissioners as having the most efficiently run office in Johnson County government
  • served as President of the Kansas County and District Attorney’s Association

At the end of his third term as District Attorney, Dennis again returned to private practice. He was a partner in the law firm of Erker & Moore, L.L.C.

In 1993, Dennis was elected to the Johnson County Community College Board of Trustees where he has worked to improve educational opportunities while maintaining a fiscally sound budget. In 1997, he was reelected to another term.

In 1998, Dennis defeated incumbent Vince Snowbarger 52%-48% to win a term in the U.S. House of Representatives. In the House, he is a member of the House Committees on Banking and Financial Services, Small Business and Science. This previous year, Dennis defeated State Representative Phill Kline 50%-47% to send him back to Congress.

Dennis' service to our community has not been limited to elected office. As a volunteer, he has served on the boards of:

  • Johnson County Safehome, which is a shelter for battered women and their children (Dennis was a founding member and served as President)
  • Coalition for the Prevention of Child Abuse
  • Kansas Child Abuse Prevention Council CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate)
  • United Community Services
  • Community Corrections Advisory Board

Dennis and his wife Stephene, a registered nurse, reside in Lenexa.
  • While in Congress, Dennis has worked hard to protect Social Security, fight for bi-partisan Campaign Finance Reform, sound gun control initiatives, stronger schools, and a substantive patients bill of rights. Most importantly, Dennis Moore and his staff work hard, weekdays and weekends for you, the people of Kansas. If you need a question answered, please feel free to visit or call the local office in Lawrence. Becky Fast, Congressman Moore's Constituent Services Director, will be glad to help you.
